Under the Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Bureau's operation funding grant, 4 new support centres for ethnic minorities were opened this year. It represents an important step in enhancing support services to members of ethnic minorities to facilitate their integration into the community.
1. CHEER
Centre for Harmony and Enhancement of Ethnic Minority Residents, CHEER, one of the biggest projects, is operated by the Hong Kong Christian Service.
Cheer offers classes on English, Cantonese, computer training, cultural understanding and orientation of community services. It also provides other services like translation, mutual support and counseling.
It also provides Interpretation and Translation Service to non-Chinese/ English speaking ethnic minorities and organizations providing essential public services. Services are mainly provided in English and seven ethnic minority languages/ dialects including Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tagalog, Thai and Urdu.
Operating hours are 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sunday, except public holidays.
SHINE, the support centre located in Tuen Mun, is operated by Christian Action.
It offers a number of programmes for ethnic minorities including English and Cantonese language classes, youth tutorials, interest classes, employment support programmes and a women ambassador project.
It also provides other services including sight translation, counseling and cultural sensitivity training to local groups.
It operates six days a week, 9.30 am to 9.30 pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, except for public holidays.
Yuen Long Town Hall, the support centre located in Yuen Long, is operated by Yuen Long Town Hall Management Committee.
It offers English- and Cantonese-language programmes, computer classes, tutorials, orientation programmes, interest classes and counseling.
Other services to enhance their access to public services include sight translation, family support services, socialization programmes and community tours.
It operates six days a week, 9am to 9pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, except public holidays.
HOPE, the support centre located in Wan Chai, is operated by International Social Service Hong Kong Branch.
It offers English- and Cantonese-language programmes, computer and interest classes, orientation seminars, counseling and social activities.
Other public services include sight translation, Internet access, and distribution of multilingual service guidebooks and information leaflets such as those on human swine flu.
It operates seven days a week 9am to 9pm, and 2pm to 6pm Mondays, except public holidays.
